Shirley Ann McGee, 89 years young, of Towanda, PA, passed away peacefully on Sunday afternoon, May 10, 2026, with family at her side in the care of Guthrie Sayre ICU in a cocoon of love. There were lots of kisses, massages, and families’ voices as she passed into a heavenly garden of flowers and joined dear family and friends that have passed before her.
Shirley was born on May 3, 1937, daughter of the late Alice Kuykendall Lewis Decker and DeLanson Lewis. She was a business graduate and majorette at Towanda High School.
Shirley married her forever sweetheart, James Raymond McGee, in 1955 and they were married a mere 71+ years.
Shirley worked for Ellis Weed in Wysox, who had several businesses and when gas was 24 cents a gallon. Eventually, Shirley and Jim moved to Porter Place (Jim’s families stomping grounds) and that is where they lived raising their four children and chasing Mr. Magoo the poodle while entertaining at their pool.
Shirley and Jim owned “The Sub Shop” in downtown Towanda and were part owners of the Laundromat on Plank Road while Jim also worked at GTE Sylvania. In later years, Shirley babysat their first grandchild, Brian, and then later went to work at Kisner Gems, The Card Shop with Suzie, and was the DuPont Shoe Store Lady for several years.
In retirement, Shirley and Jim moved to Towanda Township. She enjoyed being with friends who were always the first at garage sales, lunches, and at Tioga Downs. She also enjoyed teaching yoga and reading. Shirley and Jim also enjoyed traveling, especially to visit family on Mt. Lake and in Columbia and Charleston, SC. They always looked forward to their family vacations every year in the Outer Banks. In earlier years, trips with friends to the Adirondacks, while renting cottages on 5th Lake, was always fun with lots of kids. They also escaped to Lake George as often as they could and immensely loved those getaways.
Shirley was a member of SS Peter & Paul’s Church in Towanda and was able to attend church regularly most of her adult life.
Surviving are her loving and devoted husband, James McGee; daughter, Elaine and Larry Elliott, son, Steve and Diana McGee; grandchildren: Brian Elliott; Nichole and Dave Kang, Crystal and Rob Watts, and Eric McGee; great grandchildren, Hailey Watts and Greyson Kang; and brother-in-law, Joseph McGee Jr. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and dearest friends and also Jessie (Karen’s toy poodle).
Shirley was predeceased by her son, John Joseph “Jack” McGee, daughter Karen Lynn McGee, her parents, Alice L. Decker, DeLanson Lewis, and Henry Decker Jr., and her sister, Marion Kuykendall. She was also predeceased by several sisters-in-laws and brothers-in-laws, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong dearest friends.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 12:00 PM noon at the Oak Hill Cemetery, Towanda, PA, with the Rev. Jose Joseph Kuriappilly, presiding.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of her nephew, Austen A. McGee, from the Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, PA.
Shirley and her family would love if you would do an extra kind deed for someone in her memory.
