February 16, 1930 - December 6, 2019

 

John Peter Sick, a long-time resident of Syracuse passed away from complications of a stroke in Palm Beach, Florida on December 6, 2019. Born February 16, 1930, he was 89 at the time of death. John and his wife moved to Greenacres, FL after they retired. John was a loving and supportive husband to his wife Ruth for over 59 years, who he missed greatly following her passing in August of 2011. John and Ruth A. (Panichi) raised five children, all raised in Mattydale to include John M. of West Palm Beach, Michael E. of San Diego, Dennis N. of Baldwinsville, Jeff F. of Fort Lauderdale, and Sandra L. of Los Angeles, He is additionally survived by his sister Mary (husband Ed) Devente, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Numerous nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends are also mourning his passing.

 

John grew up in Dushore, PA with his father Francis A., mother Teresa M. (Quinn) and sister Ann (Trapani) who are all pre-deceased. He was a 1948 graduate of St. Basil’s High School where he was active and involved in school sports and coaching. After graduating from High School, John enlisted in the US Air Force in 1948 and served until 1952. He was stationed in Washington DC in the Pentagon and worked in communications until his discharge with the rank of SSgt.

 

He and Ruth, from PA, married on August 16, 1952 in Mildred, PA and shortly after relocated to Syracuse. John worked for Carrier and afterword became a businessman owning and operating several companies including a franchise for the Syracuse Post Standard and Herald Journal for home newspaper delivery. After, John took a job with the County Board of Elections.

 

John was active in local politics and worked on several campaigns and ran for county legislative. He lent great support to Ruth who was Salina Council person for 24 years. Also, John was an active member of the VFW, American Legion, Moose and Eagles. John was the President of the Kiwanis Club in Mattydale and involved at St. Margaret’s in Mattydale.

John will be remembered for being a strong family man who cared about civic engagement, church involvement, non-profit board participation and being part of his community. He loved to entertain, watch sports and was a Buffalo Bills and SU fan. He greatly enjoyed his yard, garden and pool in his younger years and was always having a BBQ with family and friends. He was a hands-on grandfather and would often take his grandkids on travel adventures throughout the US. He sported a big smile, could tell a good joke and had big powdery blue eyes. John will be missed by many.

Megan Courtney of Louisville, KY, Deanna Nelson of San Diego, CA, Jaclyn Ream of Incline Village, NV, April Sick of Ft. Lauderdale, FL Eric Sick of Los Angeles, CA and Mary Dang of Santa Ana, CA.

          John Sick was buried on Thursday, December 12, 2019 and funeral arrangements were under the direction of the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, John 206 Water St., Dushore, PA 18614.

There will be a gathering on Sunday, February 16, 2020, at 1:00pm at Mohegan Manor in Baldwinsville, NY.

A Mass and graveside gathering will be held the following day in Dushore, PA at Saint Basil's Church, at 1:30 P.M. on Monday, February 17, 2020.
