John S. Borick Sr.

February 29, 1924 — January 11, 2019

          John S. Borick, Sr., age 94, of Pennsauken, NJ and formerly of Lopez, PA, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2019. He was born on February 29, 1924 in Lopez, PA, son of the late Steve and Eva Nadiak Borick.

 

          John was raised in Lopez and after graduating High School, he was employed for a few years at the Lopez Pajama Factory “Weldon Mfg. Co.” and he also worked at Thatchers & Remington Rand. 

 

          He proudly served in the US Army during WWII. He served in the Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns with the 3rd Infantry Division and the 30th Infantry Division. John received the Purple Heart Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Silver Star Medal, Croix De Guerre with Bronze Arrowhead. Before he was honorably discharged, John was promoted to SSGT.

 

          After his service, John returned to Lopez, PA and was lucky to travel to South Jersey & Philadelphia, PA, where he was recommended to a great company, Pitney Bowes.

          He married the former Gertrude B. “Trudy” Hunter of Philadelphia, PA, in St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, PA, on October 16, 1953.  She predeceased him on August 13, 1995.

          John spent 30 years working for Pitney Bowes and loved his job as a meter leader. John was awarded Man of the Year with many other special honors & conventions. He enjoyed traveling back and forth to Lopez doing many projects in the Lopez Community and for St. Vladimir's Orthodox Church.

 

          John is predeceased by his son, John "Jack" Borick, Jr., and his sisters: Mary Dempsey, Helen Borick Bohensky Kelly, Ann Borick Waldron, Vera Borick; and brothers, Walter Borick and the Very Reverend Paul (Irene) Borick.

 

          John was a member of St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Church, Lopez, PA, and a member of McDermott Post #452 American Legion, Mildred, PA.

 

          He is survived by his beloved long-time companion, Shirley Udowski and loved ones, Shirley Ann, Marie Lynn, and Kevin.

and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

          Burial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Church, in Lopez, PA, with his pastor, Rev. Dennis Hendershot, officiating.  Interment will be in St. Vladimir’s Cemetery, Lopez, PA.

 

          Relatives and friends may call at the church on Thursday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the Burial Service.

 

          Graveside Military Services will be accorded by members of McDermott Post #452 American Legion, Mildred, PA and by the US Army Honors Detail.

 

          The family will provide the flowers, and ask that any memorial donations be directed to St. Vladimir's Orthodox Church, PO Box 211, Lopez, PA 18628.

 

 

          Arrangements are under the direction of the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, PA 18614
