Jean Somers Beatty

          Jean S. Beatty, 91, of Laporte, died Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at Vincentian Nursing Home, in Pittsburgh. She was born on October 15, 1926 in Pittsburgh a daughter of the late James Aloysius & Edna Marie McCarty Somers.

          She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 50 years, Lurting K (Pete) Beatty, a sister Marilyn (Dr. George) Wasserman of Albany NY, and a brother Jack Somers of Arlington VA. She was a high school graduate of Oliver High School class of 1944, in Pittsburgh. Shortly after High school she married Pete and they lived in the Bellevue, Sewickley and Laporte areas of Pennsylvania.

          Jean enjoyed her social life; she was an avid golfer and bridge player at Shannopin and Eagles Mere Country Clubs. She was very active and achieved Worthy Matron status in the Norwood Herrington Chapter of Eastern Star when she lived in Pittsburgh, and was also an active member of the Laporte Women’s Club.

          She was a member of the Bellevue Christian Church in Pittsburgh, and the Laporte United Methodist Church when she moved to Laporte. She was a longtime member of the Lake Mokoma Association where she enjoyed many social times on the beach, also bridge, and was lovingly known as one of the “Tree Ladies” (a special gathering place for many of her longtime friends). 

In her free time, Jean enjoyed being industrious; no task too big nor tool too risky, from mowing and maintaining her yards, maintaining and staining decks, doing small home improvement projects, painting, gardening - and then entertaining to enjoy all her hard work. 

Surviving, are a daughter, Karen (Steve) Laubach of Bloomsburg, a son, Tom (Beverly) Beatty of Sewickley, and a special niece, Kyle Wasserman. She had three grandsons; Eric (Mistie) Laubach of West Wyoming PA, Brian Beatty of San Diego CA, and Scott Beatty of Santa Barbara CA. She also had two great grandsons; Rowan and Jackson Laubach.  


A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. at the Laporte United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Cheryl A. Houser, officiating.  Interment will be in the Mountain Ash Cemetery, Laporte, PA.

 In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Jean's name to the Laporte Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 31, Laporte, PA 18626.
