Mrs. Doris Jane Newton, of Spring Lake, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 13, 2018.
Jane was born September 19, 1929, in New Era, PA, a daughter of the late Rodney & Bernice Young Wells. She married Walter E. Newton Jr. of Terry Township on November 12, 1946. He predeceased her on June 16, 1995 after 48 years of marriage.
Jane & Walter named their 160 acre farm in New Era, WAJA Farms in 1952, when they started raising and showing sheep. In the early 1960’s Walter was instrumental in establishing the start of veal production in Bradford County, PA. This was to be the beginning of a veal farming technique which developed into a nationwide industry. His ideas pioneered much of the basic management principles and building designs which are still used today. In 1966, he formulated and began to manufacture his own veal feed. In 1979, Walter formed a family corporation, Formula 1 Feeds, Inc., and Jane was the corporate secretary.
In the 1970’s Jane & Walter acquired Spring Lake and set about draining, dredging and restoring the 60 acre lake to its original condition of beauty and function. They established it as a scenic recreational area as a separate non-profit entity to be enjoyed by all and serve as a legacy to their unselfish commitment to family, friends and community.
Jane was a member of the Evergreen Christian Church. Jane enjoyed her cat Sugar, as well as feeding and watching birds. She was an avid reader.
