Mr. Arthur Andrew Yonkin, age 88, of Dushore, PA, passed away on Monday, April 22, 2019, at the Highlands Care Center, Laporte, PA.
Art was born November 7, 1930, a son of the late Arthur W. & Mary Blanche McDonald Yonkin. He graduated from St. Basil’s High School, a member of the class of 1949. He enlisted in the US Navy on July 26, 1949, and served in Europe during the occupation in the Korean War era. He married the former Bernice Helen Hugo of New Albany, PA, on October 10, 1953, while he was still in the Navy and they resided in Horseheads, NY, where she worked while Art was on active duty.
After being discharged on June 28, 1954, they returned back to Dushore where they raised their seven children. Art worked at the Dushore Creamery, drove school bus for Willis Howell and Farm Dunn, and delivered coal for Royce Molyneux. He also worked for Fitzpatrick & Lambert, and later owned his own garage in New Albany. He began working at Procter and Gamble in Mehoopany, PA, and retired from there on February 12, 1993. Art and Bernice celebrated their 61st Wedding Anniversary in October of 2014 and she predeceased him on May 1, 2015. After retiring from P&G, he was an assistant at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Homes, for over 15 years.
Art was a member of St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, PA. He was very active with the Dushore Fire Co. No. 1 and also with the Dushore Ambulance Association. He was also a member of Loyalsock Post #996 American Legion, and was involved with other community organizations. He was a loving husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and friend. In retirement he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by an infant son, Duane Yonkin and a grandson, Tristen Yonkin; and by sisters: Ann (Ivan) Tourscher, Agnes (Patrick) Hanley, Mary E. (John) McMahon, Clare (John) Quigg, and Kathleen “Kay” A. Yonkin; and by a brother: John (Josephine McMahon) Yonkin.
A Transferal Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, PA, on Saturday, April 27, 2019, and will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 A.M. at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, PA, with the Rev. Thomas J. Major, his pastor, presiding. Interment will follow in St. Basil’s Cemetery.
Friends and family may call on Friday, April 26, 2019, from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, Dushore, PA.
Graveside Military Services will be accorded by members of Loyalsock Post #996 American Legion, Dushore, PA, and by members of the United States Navy Honor’s Detail. Members of the Loyalsock Post #996 American Legion, Dushore, PA, are asked to assemble and pass in review at the Homer Funeral Home, at 6:00 P.M. on Friday evening.
