Obituary

Mrs. Anne Marie (Zawacki) Pierce, age 77, of Annandale, VA, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, with her loving family at her side.

Anne was born on February 21, 1948, the daughter of the late Stanley Leonard and Mary Elizabeth Halupka Zawacki. She graduated from St. Basil’s High School, a member of the class of 1965. She graduated from Marywood University in Scranton, PA in 1969, she later earned her MS from Virginia Tech.

On May 27, 1972, Anne married Joseph Lanning Pierce of Birmingham, Alabama. Together they built a life rooted in faith and family until his passing on June 25, 1988.

Anne devoted her professional life to caring for others, working as a dietitian in dialysis. Her compassion extended far beyond her formal role; she deeply cared for her patients and was known for going above and beyond.

A woman of strong faith, Anne lived her Catholic faith through service to others. She found her greatest joy in her family, especially in watching her grandson, Joe, participate in his many sporting events. One of her most cherished traditions was the annual summer family trip to the Outer Banks, a tradition she and her husband began.

Anne also enjoyed life’s quieter moments like long walks, reading, puzzles, and knitting. She was an avid fan of the NFL and NCAA Basketball. Chocolate chip cookies were a particular favorite, and she baked dozens of them alongside her grandson when he was younger. In recent years, she knitted hundreds of hats, generously giving them to friends, visitors, and the church to be shared with anyone in need.

Anne will be remembered as a strong, deeply faithful, and caring woman whose love was expressed through action.

She is survived by her daughter and partner, Marie Elizaberth Pierce and Brad Glatfelter; her grandson, Joseph David Glatfelter; her sister, Mary Elizabeth Hembury; as well as two nieces and three nephews, and numerous cousins.

There will be a Transfer service on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at 10:30 A.M. from the Homer Funeral Home and will be followed by A Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, PA with the Rev. Bert S. Kozen, presiding. Interment will be in St. Basil’s Cemetery

Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the Homer Funeral Home. There will be a vigil service at 1:30 PM Tuesday with Father Kozen, presiding.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in Virginia on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 11:00 A.M. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, with Father John. Family and friends are invited to gather afterward for an open house at the family home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends and loved ones plant pansies in their gardens in memory of Anne.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, PA 18614.
