Erna was born on June 29, 1936 in Hostenbach, Saar, Germany a daughter of the late Wilhelm & Anna Katarina Dietrich Schäfer. On July 10, 1955 she married Rudi Jakob Bier and they enjoyed 59 years of happy marriage before his passing on August 3, 2014. She came to the United States in 1970 with Rudi and lived in Dushore. She worked at the Endicott Johnson Shoe Mfg. Plant in Mildred for thirteen years until it closed. In 1976 they moved to Wilmot Township, PA. Erna enjoyed the outdoors and especially bird watching, fishing and her flower gardens. She loved to knit, making clothing for her children and grandchildren. She was also an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family. She was a member of the New Apostolic Church in Elmira, NY Surviving: Two daughters: Ruth (Mike) Bittell, Lansdale, PA Nency Taffe, Ulster, PA Three grandchildren: April Bittell of Sellersville, PA, Eric Bittell and his wife Toni of Custer City, PA and Susan Taffe Reed PhD. and her husband Ryan Reed of Forkston, PA. Three great grandchildren, Lila Bumm, Natalie Bittell and Orion Bittell and her precious Dachshunds, Alex, Rosie and Schatzie. She was predeceased by two sisters Maria Schäfer and Anna Schäfer Bier, and a brother Willy Schäfer. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 1:00 P.M. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, PA with the Rev. Greg Freymoyer officiating. Interment will be in Peace Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Friends may call on Saturday, January 17, 2015 from 12:00 Noon until the time of the service.
