Jane was born in Camptown on October 5, 1913, and lived there for most of her life. The youngest of five children, she was the daughter of Elizabeth and Herbert Landon. A graduate of Camptown High School, Class of 1931, she attended Mansfield State College for two years. She began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Herrickville, teaching there for seven years. During this time, she attended summer sessions at Duke University, thus becoming a life-long fan of Duke basketball. Jane was married to Robert E. Carey in June 1942, a marriage that lasted 55 years until Bob’s death in 1997. She continued to teach in the Wyalusing school system, in Camptown and Stevensville, until her retirement in 1978. In retirement, Bob and Jane enjoyed traveling, attending Penn State football games and spending the winter months in Florida, where they made many friends from around the country. After a teaching career of 38 years and more than 35 years of retirement, her students still remember her as an important influence in their lives. “I had her/him in school” was her mantra. Jane was involved in many community affairs. After her retirement, she was elected to the Wyalusing Area School Board, serving several terms. She was a charter member of the Camptown Civic Club and an enthusiastic supporter of The Camptown Races. She was also active with the Bradford County Republican Women’s organization. She served for several years on the Board of Sage House in Towanda. She was a member of the Camptown Community Church and the Wyalusing Methodist Church. She lived in her parents’ family home nurturing the family history and traditions that were such an important part of her life. She was an avid reader and bridge player.
