Marilyn was born in Laceyville on October 7, 1932, daughter of the late Ernest R. Clapper, Sr. and Vera LaFrance Clapper .She attended Laceyville High School graduating in the class of 1950. Marilyn then moved to Binghamton, N.Y. working as a secretary for the state of New York for 2 years. Marilyn married her high school sweetheart, Robert T. McCarty of Chillaway Farms, Browntown, at the Braintrim Baptist Church in Laceyville on August 17, 1952. They had celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last year. Robert just recently passed away on February 13, 2013 and she missed him dearly. Shortly after their wedding, Robert was drafted into the United States Army, where he served in Virginia and Kentucky for two years. Marilyn worked as a civilian clerk-typist at the army base as they lived in their home nearby. After Robert was honorably discharged, the couple moved to their house on Chillaway Farms, Browntown, remodeling and making it their permanent home of which they loved and raised their family of four children. Later, in 1978, Marilyn worked at the family business of Taylor McCarty and Sons, Inc. GM Automobile Dealership until Robert retired and sold the business in 1993. Marilyn grew up in the home her father Ernie Clapper built for his family on Orchard Terrace, overlooking the town of Laceyville. She walked to and from school with her friends, enjoying outdoor, and school activities. She was an active member of the Laceyville Braintrim Baptist Church, following in the footsteps of the LaFrance family. Jennie and Ellis LaFrance, Marilyn’s grandparents and Mildred, her aunt, always had their Laceyville home open to share their Christian love and hospitality. Marilyn learned to sew and to collect favorite recipes from her Grandma Jennie which she has passed down to her children. Marilyn dedicated her life to raising her four children and caring for her husband and their home. This was what made her the happiest. She had a talent for decorating, growing beautiful flowers and vegetable garden and sketching and painting pictures. She was a great hostess for all the holiday dinners, especially at Thanksgiving with both sides of her family traveling to her home to enjoy the annual large get-together. She was a member of the Wyalusing Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school and also enjoyed attending the Sugar Run Presbyterian Church where she was active in the Ladies Circle.
