Born on September 23, 1914 in Apalachin, NY, she was the daughter of Frank and Mildred Corbin Pitcher. Doris lived her youth on a farm in Warren Center, PA and graduated from Warren Center High School in 1931. She graduated after an additional year at LeRaysville High School in 1932. She married Lee Simons of West Warren, PA on October 8, 1932 and they lived in Nichols and Endicott, NY before living in New Albany, PA for 50 years. While residing in New Albany, Doris was a very active member of the United Methodist Church as well as the New Albany Community Club. Since 1996, Doris lived at the Wyalusing Valley Retirement and Personal Care Home and was the last remaining original resident since it was first opened. Doris was a very devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. “Family” meant everything to her and this love and devotion continues to serve as an example for her family members and others who knew her including the residents and care-takers at the personal care home. Surviving Doris are three children, daughters Nancy Lee Snyder of Camp Hill, PA and Ann Marie Way, Ph.D. of Tunkhannock, PA; and son and daughter-in-law John Elwyn and Kay Simons of Shavertown, PA; three grandchildren, Conrad Snyder of Catonsville, MD; Chris and Cristen Simons of Deep Haven, MN; and Kim (Simons) and Justin Tortolani MD of Baltimore, MD; seven great grandchildren, Jack, Callen, and Cate Tortolani; Corbin and Chay Simons; and twins Molly and Peyton Snyder; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, infant son Carl, brother Robert Elwyn Pitcher, and son-in-law Carl Snyder. Friends may call at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane on Saturday, March 2 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Funeral services will directly follow the calling hours at 11:00 a.m. at the same location, presided by the Rev. James P. Rouse, minister of the New Albany United Methodist Church. The service will be immediately followed by a luncheon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in her name to the New Albany United Methodist Church, 54 Front Street, New Albany, PA 18833.
