John was born May 15, 1942 one of thirteen children of Leo Francis & Ella Mae Mergo McDonald. He graduated in from the Turnpike High School, a member of the class of 1960. He served in Vietnam with the US Army, and was also stationed in Okinawa, Japan. After being discharged he began working in Plainfield, New Jersey as a letter carrier. He married the former Joann Elizabeth Turak of Piscataway on April 16, 1966. He continued his service with the postal system in Lakewood, NJ, Scranton, PA, and Sayre, PA. He was promoted to Postmaster in Lopez, PA and retired in 1997. After retirement John served as a Colley Township Supervisor. John was an active member of St. Francis of Assisi Church, Mildred, PA. He was active in his community helping with the Lopez and Mildred Old Home Days and the Mildred Fireman’s Carnival. He was a member of the White Ash Land Association, Lopez Civic Association, Taylor Creek Hunting Club and McDermott American Legion Post #452, Mildred, PA and the VFW Skiff-Bower Post #1596, Sayre, PA. John loved the outdoors and especially hunting and fishing. Surviving: Loving Spouse, Joann; son; John E & Gretchen McDonald of Worthington, MA; a granddaughter, Aine McDonald; two brothers: Leo F. McDonald, Dushore and Edward J. & Rita McDonald of Athens; three sisters: Rose & Joe Sbardella, Warren, RI, Sister Ella Mae McDonald M.P.F., Hammonton, NJ and Lorraine & Jesse Perry of Riverside, RI; brother-in-law: Francis Turak, Lake Ariel, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by brothers: George McDonald and Patrick McDonald both of Houston, TX and an infant brother Thomas of Lopez; sisters: Mary Alice Kimble of Westwego, LA, Catherine Maximiek of Lopez, Martha Penn of Marlboro, NJ and an infant sister Anastasia of Lopez, PA. A Transferal Service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012 at 9:30 A.M. from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home and will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Mildred, PA with the Rev. Joseph R. Hornick, his pastor, presiding. Interment will be in SS: Peter and Paul’s Byzantine Cemetery, Lopez, PA. Friends may call on Friday, Nov. 2nd, 2012 at the funeral home from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Graveside Military Services will be accorded by members of McDermott Post #452 American Legion, Mildred, PA. Members are asked to assemble and pass in review on Friday evening at 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
