Mrs. Ruth E (Morrow) Brown Smith, age 91, formerly of Sugar Run, PA passed away on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 in Savannah, GA.
Ruth Morrow was born November 22, 1920, in Sugar Run, Pennsylvania. Daughter of the late Frank C. Morrow and Nellie Wheeler, she was one of five children. Growing up on the banks of the Susquehanna River, she had a half-brother Charles, two sisters- Blanche (Morrow) Kissell and Edith (Morrow) Reed, and another brother Wayne Morrow. After attending a single room school in Sugar Run, she continued her education at Wyalusing High School where she graduated as Valedictorian of the class of 1939. Ruth left Sugar Run for State College, Pennsylvania, where she attended the Pennsylvania State College (University). In 1943 she graduated from Penn State with a degree in Journalism.
On June 24, 1944, Ruth married Edward B. Brown Jr., of Hagerstown, MD, another Penn State graduate, who predeceased her in 1982. They had three children- Edward B. Brown III, Linda (Sunshine) G. Brown, and Gary B. Brown. Working as a journalist for a short period, Ruth traveled to Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania supporting her family and Edward’s work initially with the Maryland Forestry Department and then with the Boy Scouts of America for many years. Settling near Reynoldsville, Pennsylvania, Ruth was an active member of the community and her church. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother for over 25 years, earning the Boy Scouts of America National Silver Fawn Award for her service. Ruth was an active member of the Beachwoods Presbyterian Church and acted as its treasurer. She was also an active volunteer with the Red Cross for over a decade, supporting deployed service men and women. She was a member of the Washington Township Election Committee and assisted in all election events. Ruth was always an avid reader, volunteer, and participant in local schools and politics. She enjoyed quilting, the outdoors, and had a great talent for, and love of flowers.
In June of 1989, Ruth married Robert Smith of Brockway, PA, who predeceased her in 1989. Ruth has seven grandchildren and relocated to Savannah, Georgia in 2005 to be near her daughter, Linda (Sunshine) Weeter.
The family suggests memorials may be made to the Beachwoods Presbyterian Church in Falls Creek, Pennsylvania or the Alzheimer's Association.
A graveside funeral service was held on Thursday, May 24th, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at the Wyalusing Cemetery, Wyalusing, PA, with the Rev. John H. Dabback presiding. Pallbearers were: Shawn Brown, Daryl Brown, Gary Brown, Ted Brown, Austen McGee and Keith Cecere.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, PA.
